Hemp Bedding for Ducks?

Looked it up at Amazon, $17.95 for 5lbs is the cheapest i could find. No clue how far the would bring me with my ducklings. I keep it in mind as one of the last resorts if i can't get any pine shavings here today…

I bought mine from New Organics:

It's good stuff. Lasts a long time too.
Shipping made it quite pricey for me as I'm in NY and it ships from VA.
But a hemp processing facility will be opening in Broome county very soon so I'm hopeful I will have a local source in the near future.

I use flax bedding. Love it and won't use anything else. I bribe it's similar to hemp, just a different plant. I get a bag that is up to my hip for like $9 and it's super light to carry and lift.

I put this stuff in the duck house last June. I will be changing it out this spring because I added straw. You can scoop the poop, it's super absorbent.

This is what it looks like in the duck house

Day 1 on hemp - so far so good. It's lighter than the bedding I've been using (pine shavings mixed with Koop Clean). Also seems to stay light even after getting pooped on - so it was easier to clean up since it wasn't as heavy. Not sure why that is - maybe something with the absorbency.. :idunno Sounds like @llombardo has the same experience with the flax too.

Forgot to get pics in the daylight - so will have to do that tomorrow.

OK updating finally LOL. Here's my assessment of Hemp for bedding with Ducks...

  • I love it - it stays dry longer and it's easy to clean up
  • Unfortunately it's not easy to find here w/o driving an hour round-trip or ordering and paying shipping costs
  • If it is ever sold at my farm store or Co-op, I'd make the switch.
  • Until then however, I have to stick with mixing my pine shavings and hay.
