My 6 month old pullets have started to lay finally! One of the first to lay is this Barred Rock pullet. I am less than enthused about her attitude however. When she sees me come into the run and coop she follows me around puffed up a little with one wing slightly lower than the rest. If I move my hand close to her or try to pick her up she will grab me (hard!) about 50% of the time. She also clucks to the others when treats are around and lets them eat first. She is not anywhere near the top of the pecking order and I have a 6 month old cockerel that just started crowing and mating. I saw other posts that others have had hens act like roosters but the fact I'm being attacked after hand raising these chicks is not cool with me.

Is there anyway to break her of her attitude? I may be getting a different older rooster in the future, not sure if that might help readjust her thinking.

I have a hen whoacts like a roo. She lives with two roos, and is not the head hen. She puffs at me, lowers her wing, but does no bite. She is a Polish, and is perfectly agreeable when she's not around other chickens. She has gotten better as she gets older. Is she older than your roo? My ren (Roo hen, lol) is three years older than my oldest roo, and I think that's oart of the problem. Having a roo older than her might help, she is better around my older roos.
I have another hen who acts like a roo...she even crows, but doesn't show any aggression toward people. I'd say wait it out...once your little roo takes over she should calm down.

Usually a hen will take the roll of a rooster if no rooster is present. Just wait for your cockerel to mature a little bit, and he will put her in her place.

Same thing happened to me with my barred rocks. As soon as I got a rooster the behavior stopped.

I have 20 chickens and all but 7 are 6 months old. They were raised together by me in a brooder and before she went through puberty this little lady was one of my friendliest chicks.

Hormones ruined everything!

I hope so! My little rooster is such a push over though... He is surprisingly easy to handle but he is going to a friends house along with 5 pullets and this girl was going to go in the group of 5 but because my friend has kids and it will be a free range situation I cannot risk her attacking anyone so I will be in the market for a new rooster.
