Hen always has her mouth open......

Mine will randomly open their mouth for a second or two and... nothing.

Kinda reminds me of The Little Mermaid when she tries to tell Eric her name and... nothing.
But, otherwise they chirp and chitter with no problem...

It's very weird, but it's rare and only a second... so I'm hoping it's not a problem, just a quirk.

1 of ours does this a lot and throws her head back when doing so. We spoke to a local vet who said it could possibly be worms. We wormed all of them and have had them all checked out and they have the all clear.

She still opens her mouth and throws her head back, so she must be just weird! She was the first to lay 2 weeks ago and hasnt missed a day, she is also eating and drinking well. It could also be a nervous twitch

While i remember the name of the worm the vet thought it could be was: Gape Worms (normally found in young birds, they attach themselves to the mucus in the windpipe)

Hope this helps?

I am relieved to read that other hens do it like my sweet one. She is just gorgeous and has no problems but she always walks around with her mouth open. My two other hens have their mouth shut and when I first noticed her weird behavior I was really concerned. I checked the temperature and if she shows deviant behavior but everything was alright ... She just keeps her mouth open

So do not be concerned, if the hen is fine and does not show deviant behavior apart from keeping her mouth open, you can be relieved. Hens are strange sometimes

Do chicks/hens ever do that when they are nervous or mad? I have noticed my hens doing this lately. We are slowly introducing them to some 3 month old pullets we will be adding to the flock soon. I have noticed them doing it lately. I have two roos and have not seen them do it. I have seen the pullets do it as well. Is getting warmer here, but they have a ton of shade and they were doing it tonight when I was putting the chicks into the attached coop from the run. I have also seen them do it in the morning when its cool out.

They seem very healthy otherwise. We treated them for lice a few weeks ago, and they have had the second treatment as well. Could it be related to that?
