Yesterday I found 1 of my hens dead in the coop. Thinking back on it, she had been acting a little strange and I haven't seen her too much lately. She has always been more of a recluse chicken though, so I didn't think too much of not seeing her around. There was bright green poop near her and on her, which would mean she either wasn't eating or she ate something gross/poisonous I think. She hasn't been laying eggs lately, my husband disposed of her before I could do a real check. They free range all day, get lots of tasty scraps and layer feed.

Today, I just found my 2 week old silkie dead in her brooder. She was fine yesterday and this morning, spunky as ever as far as I could tell. Should I take some kind of precautions? I have a bunch of babies inside in brooders and 7 more big chickens outside. If it was just the big hen I would think that it is just an isolated situation. Now I'm worried that it could be something going around..

I would love any advise that you might have. Thanks.

I'm sorry, I don't know the answer, and of course you may never be sure. But the bright green poop did jump out at me. I'd do some research on here, see if you can find a list of symptoms of diseases of chickens; I'll bet the color of the poop will be a good clue. Wish I had my old list of links, but computers crash....

Thanks for the responses. That is a great poo link. The stuff I saw wasn't on there, I should've taken a picture and submitted it, but that seems a little morbid. It was bright green, more like dye than poop. I read online that it can be caused by eating something bad or not eating anything for a long time. I kind of think she stopped eating for awhile, thinking back, I can't remember her coming around much when I gave them treats. She never seemed sick, just a bit withdrawn from the other chickens, but I guess that was a symptom.

I'm really hoping that the deaths are unrelated. I did give the chicks a couple blackberries yesterday, could they have been bad? I figured it would be a tasty fun treat that they probably would find if they were outside. Could it have choked? Ahhgk....I hope not.
