Hen aspirated. PLEASE HELP

Have you brought any new to you birds home in the last month or two?

What exactly do you feed your flock?
Have you ever dewormed them?
No. The last time we added new birds was back in December. I had fed them laying pellets but learned that the extra calcium could cause problems for our roo. I asked the local feed mill what they would recommend. I was told that since my chickens free range and get bugs and weeds from our garden that scratch feed and oyster shells on the side would be good for them. So I have started giving scratch feed. We are currently having a bit of a cold outbreak in our flock and have the sneezey ones quarantined. But she might have been exposed. I have not dewormed them yet. I don't know when or how to do it correctly. I'd been researching and getting ready to deform them when I noticed one of my chickens had sniffles. It's not gone to three with sniffles and a cough with no drainage but other than that, they show no other signs of illness. I've quarantined them but I am afraid to worm them when they are still sick.

Oh man...that was horrible advice from your feed store person.
Please ditch the scratch immediately and go back to layer feed.

I feel so bad for you...for the wrong advice which is probably the reason your bird is suffering.

Oh God I feel terrible... I wish I had never listened to that guy! What is the point of scratch feed if it's hurting my chicken?! What can I do to prevent the calcium of layer feed from hurting my rooster?

You rooster most likely won't live long enough to ever have to deal with the effects of eating layer feed.

Scratch is junk food..like candy or cookies. Don't even buy it. Your girls will be healthier never eating anything besides just layer feed which is a complete balanced food for them.

Ok. I didn't realize that. Thank you. I cant express how bad I feel now knowing I hurt my girl.

How did things turn out for you? I have something similar going on with my hen. Thank you in advance?
Our hen made a full recovery in a week and a half. Sour crop was resolved with Miconazole twice a day for 7 days and by the middle of the next week we had cured her pneumonia with .25 cc of Tylan given orally.

That is great news! Thank you for answering. My hen has improved considerably since Saturday night’s and Sunday’s gurgling sounds and sour crop symptoms. I too am giving Tylan, but in water. She tends to have yeast often in one form or another. So I will continue with the Monistat twice a day for 7 days and hope we can knock it out for good. I am also giving acidified copper sulfate in water to cover all my bases. Thanks again!
