I’ve been working on integrating my 12 week old pullets for about a month now, but I’ve got a hen that’s making it impossible. Currently, I’ve got them in a dog kennel in the coop with the older girls. One of the older girls chases them around all day from the outside of the kennel. And when I let everyone out and let the pullets free range with them (supervised for a few minutes), she attacks them- grabbing them with her feet and tearing out feathers with her beak. Now they won’t come out of their pen, and scream everytime I touch them, whereas before they were pretty calm and friendly. I’m about ready to get rid of this hen. I’ve integrated many chicks before (including her!) and have never had this happen. I’m not sure if it matters, but she’s a “designer” Easter egger- a super blue egg layer from my pet chicken, and her sister is a cuckoo blue bar. They both attack the chicks, but the white one is the meanest. All my other hens act exactly as expected- tolerant of the chicks, giving them warning pecks on occasion. But safe and peaceful around them. They are all just regular Easter Eggers.
Oh, I put the mean girls in the kennel and let the chicks mingle with the other girls and everytime they walked past the kennel she would go at them and hit the walls of the kennel. I’m getting pretty annoyed with her.
Should I get rid of her?
