Hi - I have 7 hens (no roosters), all about 1.5 yrs old, very good egg producers, generally very healthy (except some mites which I just treated today with DE). Recently though - the last couple of weeks - one of them (not sure who) starts crowing VERY LOUDLY right after sunrise (about 6AM in our area). It's loud enough to wake me up - would sound like a rooster almost to the casual observer. I mean loud...not normal crowing.
I end up running out there as quickly as I can, and by the time I get to the coop and open the door, they've settled down a bit, and I generally don't hear anything out of them (except for normal crowing) until the next morning. They spend most of the day out in their run behaving normally.
My area is pretty residential and I'm worried about annoying my neighbors, who are great folks and don't deserve to be woken up by a screeching chicken at their neighbors house every day!!!
I don't know what to do...running full speed out of bed and over to the coop every morning at sunrise is probably a non-option. Any thoughts?????
Anyone ever experienced something like this?
