Hi - I have 7 hens (no roosters), all about 1.5 yrs old, very good egg producers, generally very healthy (except some mites which I just treated today with DE). Recently though - the last couple of weeks - one of them (not sure who) starts crowing VERY LOUDLY right after sunrise (about 6AM in our area). It's loud enough to wake me up - would sound like a rooster almost to the casual observer. I mean loud...not normal crowing.

I end up running out there as quickly as I can, and by the time I get to the coop and open the door, they've settled down a bit, and I generally don't hear anything out of them (except for normal crowing) until the next morning. They spend most of the day out in their run behaving normally.

My area is pretty residential and I'm worried about annoying my neighbors, who are great folks and don't deserve to be woken up by a screeching chicken at their neighbors house every day!!!

I don't know what to do...running full speed out of bed and over to the coop every morning at sunrise is probably a non-option. Any thoughts?????

Anyone ever experienced something like this?

Sometimes a hen will be dominant and almost act Rooster like. I have had one that has been very loud too. Luckily I don't have any neighbors close by.

Mine started doing this too. I've been waking up to cluck, cluck, cluck, BAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWKKKKKKKKKKKKK. And yes, it's extremely loud. It's the same noise that's made when she lays and egg. I guess she's just overexcited about the egg being on it's way. She does it at about 6:30, then I don't hear a peep out of her until she's laid the egg.

I don't worry about the noise too much, but I'm on 5 acres. I figure if I have to listen to everyone's barking dogs all night, they can listen to my hen in the morning.

Yes! That's exactly it! cluck cluck cluck cluck BAAAWHHHH, cluck cluck cluck cluck BAAAWWWHH. Right at 6! We have 2 acres....and unfortuately the coop is pretty close to a side of our land near my next door neighbors house....hmmm.....
