Hen boxes

There probably are as many answers to that question, as people giving them. Pine shavings seems to be very common, some folks use sand. I'm sure others will respond with their choices. You can also check out the Learning Center for information on all aspects of poultry keeping. Welcome to BYC.

Would have preferred shredded newspaper or shavings. But they ate those. I use sand in the nests and it has worked out very well for my flock and climate.

I put hay in my nesting boxes a week ago and by morning they had pulled it all out. Am I putting it I. Too soon? They are 12 weeks old

My coop is a converted horse lean-tu but I hope to start major renovations soon. I have a bank of nesting boxes 2 high by 3 across, elevated off the ground, but my hens actually prefer an old recycling bin I set on the floor of the coop. They will wait in line most of the morning to be able to use it.

Yes I have a lip on my nesting boxes, I just couldn't believe they took it all out. Maybe they are too young yet. but they do get I the boxes and lay down.

I am going to try pine straw b/c we have an abudance of it around here. I don't have my hens yet so I guess I will find out.
