Hen Broke/Chipped Her Beak

Get some antibacterial ointment and put that on her raw beak. Keep putting it on ever few hours to protect the raw wound from getting infected.
By all mean give her water to drink and make a very wet mash with her feed. You can give her 81 grain chewable (baby) aspirin for pain. She could go into shock from the intense pain. So put some sugar and electrolytes in her water. Make the water warm, not cold. Warm her feed, too. Keep her warm under a heat lamp of slip a heating pad under her bedding.

Did you fix that screening?
should I crush the aspirin and mix it in her water or put the whole pill down her throat? I also have some brooder plates, would those work?

I haven’t fixed it yet. There’s a window that opens and closes on the outside with the hardware cloth on the inside. I don’t know how I’d go about fixing that unless you take the whole window out and even then, they’d still smack into either glass or hardware cloth

Use firring strips or something similar to sandwich the screen inside the frame at the outside edge of the window. I have an identical type window in one of my coops. I'll grab a photo and post it.

Give the aspirin whole directly in her beak. She will swallow.

I gave her the baby aspirin, a heating plate, warm water, & mash. She’s staying under the heat right now but she’s standing up and watching. I don’t think she’s too interested in eating or drinking right now, but I’ll leave her alone and check on her in a bit.

Hopefully on a more lighter note, she managed to give herself a name: Buckbeak.

I've never had one refuse to eat/drink with a broken beak and/or one that lost the covering. They are tender/sore for sure for several days, but still will eat/drink. I usually offer wet feed so they don't have to peck at pellets.

Buckbeak is still doing fine and she’s actually back to laying eggs, so that’s something. Apparently she’s been laying for the past few days, but my dad only mentioned today that he’s been getting eggs out of her cage. Before I went to work this morning, I wiped some dried food off her beak before putting ointment on it and it didn’t seem to hurt her at all ( she does have some keratin left ), so is that a good thing? She also kept sticking her tongue out when the water from the toilet paper would roll down her beak and she eventually tried tearing pieces off to eat. I still gave her a baby aspirin and mash. How much longer should I keep doing that for?

Yes, the keratin will continue to grow new layers to replace that outer layer that was torn off. If you are able, moistening the beak with coconut oil will help. It's a natural antibiotic and will nourish the cell growth as the beak grows back.

If she appears not to be hurting, you may stop the aspirin. But continue the mash until her beak has a hard new layer.

What is this about the toilet paper?
Did I miss something? Is she not able to drink from a water dish on her own?
