Hen carries chick under wing up to roost!

Well you have to admit it would have been a whole lot cooler if she had....centrarchid has one of the scientific kinds of minds.....l read your post and was like "Wow how cool is that!" LOL

This is cool stuff for sure. As part of this thread played out I was outside trying to get a flock of chickens to roost in new location. I am not doing so good. I am missing something about what makes them want a given location. Short grass at launch point appears important. Also having a flockmate already up there helps as well. Otherwise I do not know what I am doing. Now I gotta walk around and police up about half a dozen game stags and place them in a tree that I want them in which is not the black walnut tree they are trying to breakdown.

Well....I filmed the roosting.

...and it REALLY hurts my pride to say, I was wrong!

While it is pretty amazing to see the way the chick manages to get onto the roost, mama does not carry him. The chick navigates across the fenced bottom of the roost, jumps onto the support board that is about halfway up the wall, then jumps onto the roost and cuddles next to mama.

centrarchid, I bow my head in defeat to your masterful use of common sense! :( ...and I hate doing it.

Well, *I* like the other story much better!

I just hatched several chicks with my buff orpington. She is carrying up to 3 chicks at a time under her wings!!! It's so cool to watch. I'll try to post a picture. Until then...
