So...I heard my girl Ethel screeching and came to the coop to find that Ethel had been pecked all over her head. Nothing is open, just scrapes and swollen parts. I had to get her out from under a shade spot to see her because she was pretty afraid. Then when I caught her I saw her face. I checked it out wondering if some illness had set in. I couldn't figure it out, until...I put her back down and saw her behaviour when Lucy, another hen came near her. Ethel puffed up and flapped her wings. Lucy stood tall, flapped her wings and freakin CROWED!!! She crowed TWICE!!. I know she's a hen because she lays.
They stood across an xpen from eachother eye-ing eachother up. Ethel kept herself separate and by me. Then I saw Lucy attempt to go after Ethel. I put Lucy in the xpen that I have up for my broody hen Cosmo (I guess she's just going to go through her entire broody process). And I have a separate part in the coop which Lucy will go in at night. The bully is in jail.
I'm not sure why this is happening. They are hatch mates and have been great friends all along. Hence their names, Lucy and Ethel. They are just over a year and are ameraucanas.
The only thing I can think of is that Ethel has been doing the broody chirp sound for a few weeks, she is the lowest member of the flock but isn't beaten up by any means. Somehow that is bothering Lucy and setting her off. Ethel hasn't been acting broody as far as behaviour. She laid an egg today. It was oddly shaped but not terrible. So I'm a bit at a loss.
Here is a video of the girls behaving adversely. I was hoping to catch Lucy crowing but I didn't. So don't mind my terrible crow. Haha!! And a few pics of Ethel's poor face.
