where i camp they had the same thing, took heads off 3 chickens, after looking around i guessed it was the weasel family, (they have mink, marten fisher, and even wolverines) but it could be a raccoon. (not sure where you live or what species are around where you live)
I have had both Great Horned Owls and Cooper's hawks enter coops/lofts and decapitate birds. I have also had GHO decapitate pheasants through fencing.
That sounds like a coon to meI'm thinking more likely candidate was a coon or a weasel. Any time I've had a hawk kill a bird, they flip them over, and devour the breast. I have not yet been unlucky enough to experience loss to owl predation. Weasels and coons will both decapitate their victims. Your predator, no matter who it was will be back for an other meal.
Northern Indiana, I'm not near water so it wouldn't be anything other than a coon or possum. We have a lot of coyotes and a few foxes, but my dogs keep them at bay and I would assume that if it were something along those lines the carnage would be significant.
Weasels are found in all 48 states. I do not have water near me, yet have seen weasels. My neighbors have had weasels kill multiple birds, not living by water.
