My sapphire gem has done the egg song 3 times today and has been in the nest box 2 times today making a nest but no egg? Will she lay one tomorrow? she is about 18-19 weeks old not exactly shure on the age and hasn't laid any eggs yet. So wil she lay one tomorrow? Have your hens done this early?

If she's messing the nests, eggs are imminent, like within days.
18-28 weeks is average onset of lay for most breeds, SG are derived from high production birds(I believe). She sure is pretty!
The voracious vocalizations are typical, and are related to egg laying but not like flipping a switch-'hear the sound and egg appears'. They will call out this 'song' before laying or after or when another bird is laying or not at all. I call it the Raucous Cacophony, I once had a group of pullets so constant and loud near onset of lay that I had to close the windows to my house to work on the phone.

Thanks, she is pretty, i hope she lays in a few days she was doing it this morning again

Pullets (female chickens under a year old) getting ready to begin laying are silly creatures.

They often do go in and out of nests and get rather noisy weeks before ever laying that egg.

Many will "sing" the egg song when someone else lays an egg too. :hmm
ok thanks for the help!

She just laid the egg but it was on the coop floor could it have been nocked out of the nest box she was preparing, all that was keeping it in was a 2×2 and the nest bedding

The 2x2 should actually be taller....I use 4" deep dish pans.

THAT said new layers....it is common that the first several eggs are not in the boxes.

You can put golf balls or fake eggs in the nests to draw them in....but it sounds like she knows the nests are for laying and just had an oops.
Ok thanks might just skrew in another 2×2 over the outher one
