Hi all, my 2 year old Wyandotte was taken to the vets two weeks ago because I suspected an impacted crop. They looked after her for a day, crop feeding some type of emergency nutrition. They also noticed her panting and prescribed antibiotics. I followed the full course, and after a week saw no real improvement so took her back to the vets today. she has gained 0.2 kg, up to 2.5kg now, but a faecal sample analysed under microscope confirmed she still had bacteria persisting. I told the vet about her excessive water consumption (developed only in the past 24 hours) but forgot to mention she is also occasionally expelling clear fluid from her beak. I've put electrolytes in her water for the last 24 hours because I'm worried about her losing minerals ECT. She's on a new course of antibiotics and has an anti inflammatory prescribed in case her breathing issues are from inflamed air sacs. I'll wait and see how these new drugs work, but right now I'm just worried about her excessive water consumption and the fact that she's expelling it too. Is she overindulging now that I've been crating her overnight or is it a sign of something worse? Her crop has emptied most nights, I can't really smell any sour crop occuring, and she's still having regular if not watery bowel movements. She's also exhibiting most normal behaviours like preening and eating. Thanks in advance

Her crop has emptied most nights
Welcome To BYC

I'm sorry no one replied to you.

She's a lovely hen, how is she doing?

You mention the crop has emptied most nights? Generally a hen will fill the crop right before roosting so she has food/water to process overnight while sleeping, the crop empties overnight and should be flat in the morning before eating/drinking.

Are you keeping her in a well lit area 24/7 and is she eating at all hours?

Drinking a lot of water may be due to the infection your vet is trying to treat or she may have some type of crop issue going on. Check the crop first thing before she eats/drinks to see if it's flat.

If it's not emptying, consult your vet to see if they have a treatment outline for you to follow since she's under their care. A sour crop is usually treated with an anti-fungal/yeast medication, your vet can prescribe something for you. If the digestive system is partially blocked, they may be able to do a flush to see if that helps.
