So this is the 4th time this guy, he's 18-20 yrs old and has a dark completion, has trespassed in my backyard. This time he got one of my chickens hurt, but I'll explain the other encounters first. The first time he had simply hopped the fence and ran when I came out the back door like he was in trouble, I hadn't said a word, I called the cops to tell them there might be a guy trying to steal stuff, because he acted really guilty and suspicious. The second time he was trying grab a chicken from my pen, or reaching in it anyway (idk why? he could have asked...) I called the cops again because it had looked like he was going to one of the silkies and they are really nice. The officer came over and I showed him what had happened and where he'd ran off too. Then the third time I was outside and this guy hopped the fence and said, "Hey! Don't call the cops again - that's not cool. *glare*" I didn't like that remark but I didn't call the cops. Note this guy has never asked if its okay to go through my yard.

Funny thing: I found him on Facebook (well my brother did and I immediately knew him), I know where he works and what year he graduated and from which school.

Finally the 4th time: He hopped the fence this time and hit a bush where my bantams where pecking under and one little pullet, my new Crele Old English Pullet flew into the yard behind us, that he'd come from, and an aggressive little dog really tore her up - her tail area and up about a half inch, all the skin is gone and I could see a little organ! So I'm like OMG! But I stayed calm and got to the first aid kit. First I rinsed it out, I used peroxide, an alcohol prep pad and have changed the bandages twice. I put her in with two of her best friends to help comfort her, don't worry the wound is all covered.

I had one gnaw from the first aid kit and put that under the band-aid yesterday but I had to toss it out when I changed the bandage today. The open wound didn't bleed that much and it still hasn't and it scabbed a little but its still pretty open under the bandage.

This guy didn't even stick around or tell me the what happened, my neighbor had put their dog inside and jumped the wall/fence to knock on my back door to tell me what happened. I told them it was okay and I could fix her up, as the handed her to me. But I hadn't realized the severity of the wound until I got inside. That's when I was all like "OMG" above.

I found out today when I had talked to some other people who told me his name too, and how he's all talk but not mean. They also said I should make him pay for the vet bills to get her to a vet and if she dies to replace the chicken.

I cannot afford to take her to the vet, because my wallet got stolen that had all my money in it ($130+) and I had to pay to get my dog fixed last week and that costed $55. I know she's just a chicken but I don't want her to suffer and I think all my previous experience has helped but I asked for my prof.'s help but he hasn't got any supplies in yet.

What should I do? Advice, and please don't say I'm a bad person for letting her live through the night - she deserves a fighting chance IMO.

Thanks. This is a video of me explaining the stuff above, and when I say small flesh wound, its worse than I made it sound and I was still pretty upset and tried to stay calm.

First of all, get some barbed wire or razor wire so that guy will stop jumping your fence!!!!

Try to get the guy to pay for a visit to the vet. If you cant get your hen to the vet, I think that if you keep changing the bandages and cleaning the wound she should heal. The only things I would do differently is to give her electrolyte water(or gatorade!!!), and instead of peroxide use providone iodine in the wound.

If she wants to live, she will fight every step of the way. I really think she will live.

Best of luck!

Get a big mean dog to keep crap out of your yard...

Put up one of these signs:

If you lived closer I would 'loan' you a dog until the idiot got the idea...

I do NOT use or suggest peroxide for much of anything... Dakins Solution is better, cheaper (can be made at home), and does NOT damage tissue that is trying to heal like peroxide can and will... (Germies will NOT live if soaked in Dakins for a few...)

I think you should contact the police again and make a report for destruction of property from this person trespassing. With all the budget cuts probably they won't do anything but if this guy is not respecting your property what is going to happen next? Personally I won't say what I would be greeting this guy with, but everyone has their boundaries.

I hope your chicken gets better! And I hope your trespasser stops his behavior!

Sorry to hear about your little hen

. You can only use peroxide once to clean germs away from the wound. It is an anti pathogen and will inhibit the wound from repairing itself. I use it on a clumsy horse, but only on first treatment. Another thing I always keep in my first aid box is cayenne pepper. When there is a lot of bleeding, just sprinkle on and it makes the blood clot.
You might need it when you knock the intruder on the head

I would never say you where mean . i took in a lot of roosters once that the farmer had no idea why they all attacked each other .... Game foul or fighting chickens what ever works for you

Gauz can be any thing clean and sterile and your doing what is good for the hen she looks happy and injured but i bet she knows you love her . Tell the guy Not to jump your fence again or you will be totally uncool and call the police this time making a report Now get out . Done deal . Or you could always if you have another half help you tell him that so you have witness.

Good luck and thanks for caring many would just cut her head and broil her YUCK huh. Tammy

I had a little Sebright pullet lose almost her entire wing to a coon attack a couple months ago. I tell the treatment I used for her in the post mentioned above. Your biggest concern (other than the trespasser, I'll get to that in a minute) is infection. You will want to get antibiotics in her ASAP. TSC carries Duramycin-10 among other things. The Duramycin is relatively cheap compared to some of the others. It doesn't have directions on the package for small quantity preparation so I'll give you the quantities: 1/4 tsp per quart of water, 1/2 tsp per half gallon of water, 1 tsp per gallon of water. Having company for her helps keep her spirits up, but you have to watch they don't pick at her bandage or wound. I would not keep it bandaged any more than absolutely necessary. Apply some blu-kote is possible & leave the wound open to the air whenever possible to speed healing.

AS FOR THE TRESPASSER...that's EXACTLY what he is. You know who he is, neighbors have seen him do this so you have witnesses. Call the cops & file criminal trespassing charges. They will also add charges for any damages he has caused & the court will make him reimburse you for your girl's expenses.
