Hi, me again.

My hen who I found in the run yesterday with an egg stuck had it happen again today. However, today's egg was much more difficult for her to pass. She was REALLY straining and a hard mass just above her vent was protruding. I thought it was the egg at first but the egg ended up coming up from below the vent. Being fairly unfamiliar with chicken cloaca anatomy I looked it up after and I think the mass was her cloacal bursa? I'm wondering if she injured it. Yesterday after she passed her egg she was back to normal, she had a normal poop and was up and about back to her normal chicken self. Today, her vent has not gone back to normal (some red tissue is still protruding) and she is standing in one spot, fluffed up and eyes closed. I was able to give her a calcium citrate tablet just now. I was not able to get her to swallow it yesterday when I tried.

She is my favourite hen and I'm really worried about her. Is she going to be ok?

Photos?

Give her the Calcium Citrate+D3 once daily for a week. Hold the hen, pull down on the wattles and pop the pill into the beak, let her swallow.

What do you feed, including treats? Is oyster shell available?

It was very difficult to get her beak open, she was not cooperative at all but with my husband's help we got it done. Definitely not a one person job haha. I will give her a calcium tab daily.

She is on Prostock 16% grower/finisher food as we have roosters. Oyster shells are available and we also feed their egg shells back to them. They get kitchen scraps too, usually just fruit and veggie scraps. Now and then we give them dried mealworms but haven't been giving them much lately.

How is she doing?

No, the stance tells us she's not doing well.

Hopefully the calcium will help her expel the egg or whatever material she's trying to push out.
She seems better today. Her vent is looking more normal and she's moving about a bit. She hasn't laid yet today and I'm expecting another chicken bath is in my future but I will keep her isolated and keep giving her calcium 🤞🏻

Thanks for checking in 😊

Is she able to poop?

Good that you have her separated for now, if any tissue is exposed, the others can pick at it and cause damage.

If the tissue is still exposed some, apply an oil/ointment or honey to keep the tissue from drying out.

Keep up with the Calcium and see that she's staying hydrated. Hope she passes material soon and the tissue will go back in.

Yes she has been pooping and her stools are normal. The tissue has gone back in now 👍🏻 but she's just started to sing an egg song so we'll see what happens. Fingers crossed!
