Doing a necropsy is like doing an autopsy on a human. Sorry if I'm too graphic, but you would cut her open and inspect her insides to see if anything is out of whack. If she was egg bound, you'll find the egg and blockage, or if she was an internal layer you'll find what looks like a russet potato in her abdomen. Judging by the photo of her bum, I'd say she had some sort of infection going on inside. But if you've never seen the inside of a chicken before, it would help to have someone there that knows what a normal chicken carcass looks like.
I'm sorry for your loss... it doesn't make it easy, knowing or not what kills our girls.
