Hen Huddled in Corner

Miss Prude spent most of today and yesterday either perched on her roost or huddled up in this corner.
She’s 2.5 years and she’s been dealing with a lice infestation but I think we have it under control now. I don’t see any more lice on her.
She doesn’t really lay anymore.

What do y’all think could be the matter with her?

Is she eating and drinking? What do her poops look like? Has she been molting? She could have a reproductive disorder since she is not laying, unless she is molting. Have you seen any abnormal or shell-less eggs?

She lays once or twice a month.

Normal

Has she been molting?

I don’t think so, I don’t see any feathers laying around nor missing feathers except what she lost from the lice. They (the feathers) are growing back actually.

Have you seen any abnormal or shell-less eggs?

No, when she does lay her eggs have normal shells.

If she just got over a lice infestation, they've probably run her down. Even though lice aren't blood-sucking, that'd still take a toll on her. I'd give her vitamin water like Nutradrench or Poultry Cell every other day for a couple of weeks. If she's molting or something else is going on, vitamin support can help that too plus feather regrowth.

I would also alternate a day here and there with probiotic powder in their water or just give some sugar-free yogurt, Greek being the best. Maybe a tablespoon per chicken per day for a few days. That would help her digestive tract.

Maybe these two things would perk her up a little bit. Make sure she has no mites or lice left on her though. Have you dusted her and her area with Permethrin or something?

That’s good to know she’s probably just run down. I’ll be giving her vitamin water, and she loves yogurt.

Yes, we’ve treated the area but I’ll probably give everything another round to make sure all the lice are gone.

Lice are hard to get rid of unless you are aggressive. Permethrin garden dust can be used at 10 day intervals at least twice to get the bugs, and later the newly hatched lice. The coop bedding should be removed and the coop, roost bars, and nest boxes should be sprayed with permethrin which lasts about 30 days.
