Hen in distress please help

None of our vets take care of farm animals or birds. The local feed store could not refer a vet either.

What kind of antibiotics do you have on hand? I was just thinking as a preventative in case the plastic had caused any abrasions on the way through, but it's no guarantee. You're doing the best you can for your girls and they appreciate it! I don't have any vets near me that see chickens either, it happens. How are the ladies doing tonite?

I have Duramycin -10 which is Tetracycline Hyrdochloride. It is for farm animals and my husband did the math for one chicken. Chirper the first chicken has lost a lot of weight but seems to be much less agitated. She seems to be moving back to her feisty self. Her swelling continues to reduce. Pansy the second chicken doesn't seem to be improving and looks miserable. My husband just got home so we were able to force the antibiotic as we have in the past with a syringe. Thanks for asking, I will keep you updated.

I never thought I would be so happy to see Chirper back to her cantankerous self. She is squaking loudly and voicing her displeasure as usual. Who would have thought that would be music to my ears.

Pansy the most recently notice problems on the other hand isn't doing that well. I don't think he swelling has decreased at all. I will do by best to help her and ease her pain. I hope it will make a difference. She is such a sweetie. You should have seen her in her bath yesterday. She looked like a chicken princess in her jacuzzi.

Thanks to all of you for your support. How wonderful to meet people who love chickens. You are wonderful peeps.

So glad one of your chooks is getting better, even if she is a cantankerous madam

It could be they both have different issues and that is why the other is not responding to the same treatment? Still theres hope yet for her, fingers crossed, at least she is being spoilt with her warm baths! Keep us updated X

Chirper is most definitely doing better. She was squawking her displeasure so much in regards to her bath that we all decided that maybe she just didn't need it. I think her swelling is all the way down and the bright redness has disappeared. She has lost quite a bit of weight but is full of energy and all the feathers are back to their normal positions. She is back to bossing us (including the other chickens) around. I never thought that I would be so excited about that. LOL

Pansy on the other hand seems a little more swollen. She did enjoy her bath and yogurt treat so at least she is still enjoying things. I hope she starts to recover because I don't want her to suffer a lot and I don't know how my husband or I could cull her. :(

I do have antibiotics. They are not what the site described but at least I have some. I am not sure if what I can get my hands on anyway. I will start them right away. Poor girls. I hate to see them suffering.
Oregano Oil is a type of antibiotic for chickens as well. I put one single drop per gallon of water & it's helped mine recover when I get a sick one.
