Hen inhaled food; wheezing & coughing

I forgot to say that the directions say 1/2 tab for a small chicken, 1 tab for a large. Per day. She's much better, I'm happy to say. At least it seems so. The raspy breathing has stopped. When I picked her up this evening to clean out her cage, she just coughed once. My husband sat in the oher room on the couch, held her and talked to her while I cleaned her cage, and she fell asleep in his arms, lol.

She ate well when eating her dinner, and I think she ate all her breakfast. It's funny because she goes to her stuffed chicken "friend" whenever anyone comes in to the room she's in, and hides her face. Poor thing, she's so timid, more than any other chicken we have, I think. But I anticipate she'll be back with the flock by this weekend.

They are "canker tablets" I got from www.firststatevetsupply.com. It's Metronadizole, 250Mg, I believe this is also "fish zole" if you can find in a pet store. Thing is, symptoms are not always identical, and sometimes you can go off on the wrong course of treatment. I never thought about Canker with this hen, because I never noticed anything wrong until her breathing issue. Our other hen that had canker had it longer and it was more advanced, she had yellow lesions all over her mouth, and she was just a little lethargic, but she did not have the breathing issue. Her breath was also awful, which is not the case with Muffin, maybe because we caught it early. However, both hens had poor appetite, lost weight, but not so much that it was really obvious until they were more advanced, you see? . You can also use Copper Sulfate to treat Canker, but it's nasty and dangerous, and I don't know where you can get it. You can't use the kind that garden stores sell. Metronadizole is much safer. Canker is caused by them drinking dirty/ contaminated water, from puddles, etc. I think it talks about that in the link that Starfox posted on here. . It's a protozoa.

so exactly how did you know that was it? looking inside her mouth? I was scrolling through because I have a turkey who sneezes an coughs especially after eating. I noticed it about a month or two ago and thought it was feed related and changed the feed to pellets, but she still does it. any other suggestions?

I knew that was it because she had yellowish lesions inside her mouth and that's a classic sign of canker. I don't know about turkeys...but have you looked in the turkey's mouth? Canker when it is bad also can have a foul odor..but not always. And sometimes it isn't visible, it can be in their throat or crop where you can't see it. Repost your question in the Turkey thread for better results.
