It's not good practice for several reasons. The floor is not the cleanest or most convenient place for eggs to be laid. Keep them within easy reach and you'll thank yourself later. I'm 55 and have a bad knee and back. The last thing I want to do is reach down under everything to get a few eggs off the floor!

thinking about putting them on the floor under where they are now. and putting up a roost in that spot

I don't recommend putting nest boxes on the floor. You will regret this later.

You can still have them on the "floor" but up a few inches (mine are elevated about 3" on little legs), if that makes it easier to keep soiled floor bedding from getting in there. I also have a bad back but stooping twice a day for eggs is manageable.

I have never had this and I have smaller nests, but my birds always turn around and face out. But it is such a coincidence that you posted as yesterday, I took fertile eggs to another crazy chicken lady, and her broody chicken was facing the wall.

I've seen something that looks like a rain gutter attached to the nest boxes to collect the eggs. The nests are deliberately tilted toward it so the eggs will roll into it. Normally these are on the back, but for situation you could put it on the front, if it's possible to tilt the nests that way.

I rearranged my nesting boxes to two large on the bottom and one small up top with the entrance turned towards the platform. seems to be working well. waiting for large crates to come so i can replace the cardboard boxes. thanks for the ideas!

I would put the nest boxes on the floor with larger boxes to accommodate the larger hens. DON’T put a roost above the nest boxes, though. The nest boxes will be full of poop overnight. If you have no other choice, put a cover on the nest boxes to catch the poop.
