Hen keeps one eye closed

Oh no poor girl. I’m sorry she is going through this. Can you get some pictures of what you’re seeing in her eye? Do you think it is pus that needs to come out? It sort of sounds that way. Or is it more of a film? Pics would really help. Does it feel like there is any hard mass to the swelling?

As you can see in the video, it may take some pressure to remove pus if there is any. I totally understand the apprehension with this process, though. How is she otherwise?

Here are a couple pictures of her eye. I had to hold it open. She was not happy. The pictures are a bit blurry; I hope you can see well enough.

Okay it is difficult to tell, but to me, it does look like there is pus in there. I could be wrong, but that does not look like any natural part of her eye. It isn’t a foreign object is it?

It will need to come out if it is pus or she will not get better. I’m going to tag some more experienced folks for a second opinion on that and help with removal if it is pus.

I took a much closer look at her eye. It has a clearly defined top edge to it and seems a bit thicker in the middle. When I tried to touch it, it wanted to slip down under her lower lid. It does not appear to be a foreign object. So I would guess it is pus. I tried to push it forward without success. Of course, I am fighting a very unhappy hen all this time.

I know the struggle, I am sorry! She will not be happy about this. And I know it is intimidating. Try after a very warm compress is held to it for a bit. This might make the pus a little more mailable. You might be able to carefully use a q-tip to get worked out, too. But do be careful, if she’s too squirmy it might not be a great idea. Do you have a helper?

Yes, I think my husband will help me. We’ll try in the morning.
