I have 9 mo old BSL that had gone broody and hatched some PR chicks in March. We adopted her and her 4 chicks in mid-April. We have been anxiously waiting for her to lay her first egg. This morning I fed, watered, and checked the coop once again for an egg, nothing. I just went out to check on them again and low and behold, THREE eggs! The babies are only 7 weeks old so can't be theirs. Is this normal?
Nope not three - is someone home with you? I've read alot of posts about sneaky family members joking around by putting eggs in when someone is anxiously waiting for the 1st egg.
Is it possible that she had the eggs buried in the bedding and you didn't see the eggs and today when she laid the egg she kicked the other 2 up from the bedding?
I checked the coop just 3 hours before. They were all in a row touching without litter on them. This is how I found them (guess I need a better nest box, she didn't use it). I took the pic before moving them because I was so excited! The coop isn't very big 4ft by 4ft converted dog house.
Ive heard of other chickens doing that and even laying more than that at once. From what I have heard its when somewhere inside the eggs get stuck and then unstuck when more than one is laid at once. Ive heard of other chickens laying 12 unfortunatly then dying. But I am not a chicken expert (yet! lol)
