Why? What made her want to lay an egg in the run? I am supplying perfectly good nest boxes. But This is the second time shes done this. Its also her second egg too. Shes a new layer. Will she figure it out?

Thanks for all your valuable input!

Having them lay in the run isn't that usual and laying in the floor of the coop is quite common. Normally they will start laying in the boxes and you can encourage them by placing fake eggs or golf balls in the nests.

I'm not making any guarantees. But we had golf balls in all the nest boxes and the ladies were using them.... except for poor Estelle. She couldn't figure it out and left eggs everywhere at the beginning. After egg three or four she finally figured out what the nest boxes were for. That said, I think sometimes they figure it out and sometimes they just don't. Good luck!

We had some people visiting one day when one hen plopped one right in front of them in the run! She strutted off like nothing happened.

She now lays dutifully in the nest box. They'll learn. Just make sure you collect the eggs regularly to keep them from breaking and the hens from learning about the self-serve buffet of broken eggs

Last week I had that same problem....for 2 days there were eggs in the run. Then there was one on the floor, and they've been in the nest the past 3 or 4 days. I guess she did figure it out! Good luck!!

My silkie lays in the run all the time. When I had her in a coop up off the ground she would lay in the floor and not in her nesting box and now she is a run layer. I try too teach her somehow but she doesn't even try too go in the coop at night. Actually none of our silkies do. My DH has too go out every night and put them in the coop.
