We have a 14 month old black sex link hen who over the last several weeks has started laying eggs with a "ring" around them. Some are more obvious than others (the one pictured below is the worst one yet from a few days ago) and some are barely noticeable unless I pointed it out to you and you felt it.
This one pictured even has a cracked appearance in the ring part, but its actually completely solid so I assume the crackling came along while it was hardening?
About the hen: she lays 5-6 eggs a week. The biggest thing that has changed with her is that several weeks ago we removed her from the main flock to let her recover from a rooster over breeding her. She's now in a small flock with 12 week old Marans and they are all eating chick starter until the Marans are old enough to switch to layer feed. Because of this we offer her free choice oyster shell. She also free ranges with her mini-flock regularly throughout the week. These ringed eggs started appearing (or we started noticing them) a couple weeks after she was moved to the new pen.
Any ideas?
