Hen Losing Weight

@BayBay Peepers
, which place did you buy the Baytril from and how long did it take them to get it to you?

-Kathy

Ok....I ordered the liquid. From this place.

Kathy....do you just follow the directions and mix it in water?? Or can I use a syringe and give an undisputed amount once a day??
Looks like one of my other chickens is following the same path. Not eating/loosing weight. I started to tube her last night. She's still somewhat active, but her poops are dark green. I don't want to give antibiotics, but if it's the only shot she has I will. She stopped laying and I thought it was due to the daylight hours but she has laid one egg in two weeks. She's not her obnoxious little self. I say that cuz she is my loudest chicken EVER!

Quote: Sorry, forgot to send you the link! Doesn't matter, any of them will be just fine. Anyway, the dose I give is 0.2ml per 2.2 pounds once a day (20mg/kg) by mouth. I know you had the 22.7mg pills for your other hen, right? How much of that were you giving her and what was her weight when you started giving them?

I was giving her a half a pill once a day and she was 3.7lbs when i started her on baytril. The RX was for 14 days, I had NEVER seen baytril prescribed for that long, so I think that was a mistake. I only gave it to her 10 days. In cats/dogs I think it was only prescribed for 5-7 days.

Quote: That's not very much, but maybe your vet had a reason. Can you call and talk about it? My vet usually prescribes it for five days, but one time told me to give it for 10 days. Prescribed amount for us has always been one of the following:

  • 10mg/kg twice a day
  • 15mg/kg once a day
  • 20mg/kg once a day

You vet had you giving 6.75mg/kg. FYI, cats never get more than 5mg/kg because it can cause blindness.

Hmmm interesting. Maybe with chickens it's more beneficial to give a smaller dose for a longer period of time. I would but he's on vacation for the next couple of weeks. So if my hen is 3.7 she would get close to 0.4ml of the liquid?? FYI....my husband always makes fun of me because of my math skills!

Quote: To calculate the dose - weight of bird in pounds, divide by 2.2, times # of mg/kg you want, divide by number of mg/ml (your's will be 100mg/ml). Based on a 3.7 pound bird at 10mg/kg it looks like this:
  • 3.7 ÷ 2.2 x 10 ÷ 100 = 0.168ml

At 6.75mg/kg:
  • 3.7 ÷ 2.2 x 6.75 ÷ 100 = 0.11ml

Dose that make sense? Have your husband check my math, 'cause I do make mistakes!

Wow! I was way off lol!! Thank you Kathy....the 0.168 rounds to 0.17? In your chickens do you normally do once daily for 5 days?
Your math looks correct....I always forget that I have to turn the weight into kg.

How is the other hen doing?

She's about them same. I really can't figure out what's wrong with her. I think she's dropping feathers because she wasn't eating...lack of nutrition I guess?? I started treating for coccidiosis just in case. Her poop goes back and forth from green to brown, so I'm not sure if she has an infection. They really stink though!! I don't remember my other hen having this big of a problem with the smell. I ordered the baytril, so that shipped today....who knows when I will get it though. Lol...I'm so tired of sick chickens!!! But I do know she is not eating or drinking so maybe treating for coccidiosis will turn her around. How are your new chickens?
