This is a post of several questions.

1. We have a Livornese hen who makes a weird sound, almost like a pigeon, or crying? It is the only sound we've heard her make and it is everyday. In 8 years of having chickens/hens/roosters we've never heard a hen make this sound. She seems happy and healthy and is laying, is this just her voice or should we worry?

We have a Vorverk that we separated from the flock with her roo to reproduce, but after 2 weeks she wasn't laying so we thought we might as well let them be free as it wasn't productive. We are pretty sure she has never laid an egg for us, is this normal?, shouldn't they be a productive breed?

We have neighbors behind and next to us who have complained about the roosters crowing all day and also starting super early, almost when it is still night, like 3-4 am. We don't have local ordinances that limit chickens/roosters, their noise whatever, but we like our neighbors and don't want to bother them. Is there any way to get them to crow less? I am thinking of giving away our roosters that we don't want to reproduce pure bred, although they are beautiful and if the right lady were to come along...

Any suggestions? Please don't say soup

When I lived in town I kept the roosters locked in their coop until a reasonable hour.

You can try crow collars on your roosters to muffle their volume of crowing. I like the cock collar brand from australia. There are debates on here as to whether or not they are humane. You can search crow collars in the forums and read what people have to say to decide for yourself. I personally find it perfectly fine and a good solution.

That being said, I would probably also rehome any roosters that are not of use to you. Why feed an extra mouth, unless its a pet that you're attached to?

My barred rock makes a clucking sound similar to a pigeon. Only at night when I go into the coop with the head lamp. I guess I'm disturbing her, but it's the only time she makes that noise and she's also the only one that does it.

Also, if you could provide more info on the hen that isn't laying I think you'd get better responses. Such as her age, what does her comb and wattles look like, does she eat, drink, poop normal etc. I would think that unless you're south of the equator not laying right now isn't odd. None of my laying hens are laying right now either, including a pullet that has not molted yet. She laid for a while and is taking a break right now.

I don’t know the answer to the last two questions but in your first question you said that your hen makes a crying noise. I have a hen that makes weird noises and she is in great health. As long as nothing else seems to be wrong I wouldn’t worry about her making those noises. I hope that you can get answers to your other questions soon. :)

Thank you for your replies! We are locking them in their coop until we leave for work which helps a little. I will look into crow collars, but I don't know...
The Vorverk is in great health, active, happy, eats, drinks and poops. I don't know how old she is, we've had her since November i think, she is at least a year old i would say. Our other chickens have pretty much layed throughout the winter because it has been unseasonably warm. I guess we'll just wait for spring and hope she starts laying.

Thanks for the reassurances for the chicken with a funny voice, it is strange because the other Livornese sounds like a normal chicken, I guess this one is just having an identity crisis, maybe she thinks she's some other kind of bird
