Hen not laying an egg

I found one of my hens making a nest in my pig pen today. She was doing the same thing my other hens do when they lay eggs. My pig was headed back to the pen to lay down so I pick her up and put her in the coop. I kept checking on her to see if she had laid an egg so I could let her back out. I didn't want her to lay an egg somewhere in the yard. Well, she never laid one. This is a really stupid question, I know... but can chickens hold there eggs in until they feel comfortable to lay it?

Yes they can. They also will fake needing to lay sometimes, especially if they are newer layers.

I believe they aren't familiar with all the sensations yet, so they can act goofy.
