Chicken tails in young birds are an extremely unreliable way of gender ID. Free standing profile pictures are the best.

How old? As others have already mentioned, tails (and wing fearhering) are not a reliable indicator of gender in chicks. After about 12 weeks you can usually see the male specific pointed saddle and hackle feathers, though some males are slower to develop. Until then, comb and wattle color and size are what we're looking at.
