Hen or Roo? or is it too early to tell?

That hatch I had two bantam cochin hens co-brooding 6 eggs. All 6 hatched, but one vanished. 3 roosters and 2 pullets from the remaining, so not too bad. The not-laying pullet from that hatch has always been smaller and slower to develop than the laying bird, but her comb is getting redder now so I'm hopeful!

Nice, around 50% hens.... my hatch from the spring produced 6 chicks, 1 hen, 5 roosters and I saw the same thing with the hen being smaller and slower to develop.

I'm always happy with the 50%. The only other hatch I got in last year hatched Memorial Day weekend, and was also a 50/50 split. Course, I'd love to have all or mostly pullets, but I'd rather half than more roosters!

Thank you for sharing your updates in the chick pics, I just hatched out some of my own chicks recently and started to learn how to feather sex them, I also found that if there are no tail feathers visible 1-2 days after hatching ur most likely looking at a roo too, love your little black hen,

Thanks Oletymer,

What breeds did you hatch?,,,, any pictures you can share?

I'm looking to hatch out eggs this spring... I'm hoping I have a hen go broody, but if not I plan on placing eggs in the incubator early April.
