Hen or Roo?

This is the only coturnix quail I am kinda on the fence about. Right now I think it's a hen because it doesn't make the calling sounds the roos do. But there are only a very few speckles on the chest.

Looks like a rooster to me. Rusty color indicates male, even though there is a small amount of speckling. Some roosters develop later than others, so that may be why it's not calling like the other roosters. You could try checking its vent to see if it is male or female.

I agree with sara. If foamy stuff comes out the vent, it's a male. It is a tough one to feather sex.

6 weeks tomorrow. I'm 100% about all my other roos (8). They also all call out like non stop. But not this one. I was hoping it's a hen. I have too many roos. Unfortunately most will have to go to freezer camp.

Okay, that is a male for sure. He is just maturing a little slower than your other males.

I just processed one male trouble maker that was 7 weeks old and he still had a few of his baby feathers on his cheeks. He had all his orange chest feathers in but I never heard him crow once.
