Hen protecting her eggs?

Our hen and our turkey hen are both to the point of laying on a daily basis. Yesterday, we had a situation where our hen and our roosters were going clucking at each other. I went out, and removed the egg from the nest, and everything was fine after that. It wasn't like she was laying on her egg, she was just clucking up a storm at the rooster that was in the house at the same time... Has anyone seen this before? Is this normal? Should we not keep our roosters in the same coop as our hens?

My ameracaunas do not care for there eggs we'll then again that is just in there blood.

She is a brown leghorn, the turkey is a bourbon red, and the roosters are black australorps...

The sound produced was likely not clucking, rather a low intensity alarm call called a cackle. They produce calls for a large number of situations that are unique to the situation. Vocabulary with at least some likely rivals that known for wild turkeys.

Hens that are confused or alarmed by something such as an amorous rooster will make such a call. Sometimes a rooster will also get alarmed and such is particularly evident when birds are in confinement. When not confined not stressed the hen an rooster attending are very quite around the nest.
