Our 1 year old Buff Orpington has been sitting in one of the nest boxes backwards for two days. She is not sitting on any eggs and when I reach in to pet her, she is aggressive, which is very out of character for her. She has never acted this way and I'm not sure what she is doing or how to help her?! Looking for suggestions!

She could be going broody. Or she could be hiding from the others if they are pecking her. Most likely, broody, if she is not normally an aggressive bird. A hen doesn't need to be sitting on eggs to be broody. It is a hormonal change in the hen. Hormones will change any female from a darling to a devil.

Going broody... now if she starts walking and clucking backwards, then you know you are in trouble.
