hi community,

Our hen used to be a productive layer. But after laying a soft-shelled egg a few months back, she hasn’t laid an egg since.

However she is still making lots of noises in the morning and going in and out of the nesting box as if she is about to lay.

She appears to be in good health. But she does have a history of “sneezing” when she was little.

Any idea on what might be happening.

Thanks a lot in advance!

I wouldn't think it was an egg-bound situation, but it doesn't hurt to check. Sounds more like she's been taking a winter break.

Questions:
Are you supplementing light and/or food?

How old is your hen?

Have you recently checked her for parasites/worms?

When was her last molt?

Do you have other hens, and are they laying?

Thanks Dunnmom for the quick reply.

We live in Australia, so there is plenty of light and it’s pretty warm at the moment :)

She is about 10 months old. She hasn’t had a molt.

I haven’t checked for parasites and worms. Good idea!

Couple of the other hens were broody but most of the others are laying fine.

I am more worried about diseases as she grew up with some symptoms of respiratory disease but without the fatigue and contagiousness.

Thanks

I have 3 Hens, out all day lots of access to big garden, oyster shell etc. They are about 18 months old and have been good layers until this winter, when they started laying more erratically (which dowry me as it is winter here in UK) and now soft shell eggs _ 3 in last 2 days.
Am I doing something wrong? I am a new hen owner, Andy how do I check for parasites and worms please?

How warm?
Heat waves can put them off laying.
Might check her vent and belly just to be sure there's nothing amiss there.
Her poops look OK? Tho heat can make them drink more and it goes right thru them to shed body heat.

It’s about 30 degrees Celsius in Brisbane. Having said that, the other hens seem to lay fine.

I will definitely need to check for parasites and worms. Thanks!
