Hen suddenly acts blind with puss and significant swelling in one eye.

I would just like to say that first I am sorry for your loss. I really think that people should not criticize someone who chooses to cull a sick chicken with a respiratory disease especially with a swollen pus-filled eye. I realize that many people here will medicate and treat sick chickens forever, but we should give helpful suggestions when someone wants to give medications, but then we need to respect the person's choice if it is to cull. I just read my bleach bottle, and guess what? It says it kills 99.9% of household germs--seems like that is equal to Lysol. There are actually 2 kinds of Lysol by the way--1 is a cleaner, and the other is a disinfectant.

Okay, you can put away the soap box. I wasn't criticizing. I considered culling my own hen when I noticed her eye problems. If it wasn't for the fact that I had the ability to do a swab and actually see the worm eggs under the microscope, she'd be history. If the ivermectin thing hadn't worked, she still would have been culled. I was just giving her a suggestion just in case another of her birds comes down with it, its a quick remedy and if you don't see improvement within a couple of days, you know you don't have eye worm and that its probably time to cull. Excuse me for trying to be helpful.

It wasn't you I was referring to in particular, so sorry if I offended you. I was just wanting to tone down all of the comments being made toward the OP after she had made her decision to cull. People from all sides were telling her to cull, to treat, it was this , it might have been that...after she made the decision to cull, I think then we need to express our sympathy and let it go.

OMG ENOUGH ALREADY!!! I SIMPLY SAID THAT IS NOT THE METHOD I WOULD CHOOSE! CUT THE LYSOL WIPES INTO TINY PIECES NEXT TIME AND TRY THAT, MAYBE THAT WOULD MAKE THEM LAST LONGER! For crying out loud, leave the OP alone! I was giving her a less expensive alternative, that's all, and yes, it's true, she can do whatever she wants with her birds!

OK, ENOUGH ALREADY. I WAS JUST GIVING HER AN ALTERNATIVE. O.M.G!!!! Bleach and even Oxine is cheaper than using Lysol wipes. And it's true it was her bird and we are sorry but people are just letting her know what she might consider for the next time. btw, if a necropsy is conducted it should be done within twenty four hours.

Not true... I've had some die on Friday and being the cheap person I am and not wanting to pay for Saturday delivery, I waited until Monday to ship UPS 2 day for a Wednesday delivery - They had no problem with the condition of the birds.

Of course they prefer them to be really fresh and live is even better in their eyes, that way they can draw blood

Sorry, I thought you were talking to me since my post was the one just before yours.
No harm no fowl!

My state lab has me hold them upside down under running water and rinse them then double bag them and freeze them, then I can keep them in the freezer for up to a few days before sending them. They said that this is the best alternative to fresh.
