Hen vomiting

well... huh.. that stinks.. I don't care how full the office is.. he is a vet.. every animal is important to someone or they would not be there.. grrrrr

The good news is she is still alive.

Is she holding down the bread and milk? If so.. its enough to keep her going. I would put some sorgrum (mollasas) in with it for vitimans and sugar. If you have bird type vitemins that may also be good.
I have seen them through up from worms but normally by that time they are pooping whole large round worms or lots of little red ones as well.. does't sound like she is doing that.

If she is keeping down the bread and milk.. maybe slowly add in some baby cerial, etc and work her back to solid foods.. If her croop was enjured or sore she may just need some healing time?

geez.. I feel for ya.. Hope things get better for both of you.

After we emptied her out I haven’t noticed her vomit any more. Her poop is normal even the vet observed that. And I’m sure the breeder we got her off about 4 weeks ago would have wormed her regularly. The vet confirmed her crop is swollen. She is just hiding in the coop with her head pulled in. She does however respond when we come over to check on her. She stands up and comes over to say hi. Vet commented she was skinny too. I wonder If she has been having trouble eating /holding down food longer than we are aware of. I’m sure she hasn’t been laying for 2 weeks now.

They will stop laying sometimes when moved.. that is normal. What bothers me is the fact she may have been sold to you like this.
If she is holding down the bead and milk.. its soft on a swollen croup, and it has some nutriance.. I have seen everything from wild baby birds and wild rabbits to sick human kids do well on that stuff.. I guess you just wait and see, and maybe mix some sorgrum into it and if she is doing well after a bit, start her back on solid foods slowly, maybe with oat meal added etc untill she is fully recovered. baby oatmeal has more vitimans and minerals, its more money, but .. something to think about anyway.

Hope she gets better.

I'm sending good vibes your way, Kiwichook! I've got a barfing hen on my hands now, too. Only once that I've seen so far, just tonight as we were putting them away. We caught her visiting the "freshman dorm" and she just spewed all over the ladder on her way out. I had to chase away the other birds who were trying to lap up the sick and take away the ramp

. The reason she was there was to chow some of the grow food + chick starter mix from the younger pullets house...I'm wondering if that might have caused her to barf?

Hopefully mine was just a one time thing. I will have to watch her tomorrow. If it keeps up, I'll follow your (milk-soaked) breadcrumb trail to a treatment!

Thought I’d post a wee update.
Chicken is still alive. I haven’t seen her spew for 3 days now. She is eating well and seams to be becoming more energetic. Her crop is still puffed up and swollen. No eggs from her for weeks. I’m just hoping she will get better with more time. I still have no idea what the real problem was/is. Thanks for ever ones suggestions and good luck with your bird too FractalFarmer.

Hi Kiwichhok, where are you in the world - I am in NZ so just wondered? :) My cure all is 10 cloves of peeled/chopped garlic steeped in hot boiled water, when the water is cooled to room temperature (so you can stick your finger in it and it is not hot) take an eye dropper and give her thrre decent squirts down her throat. Repeat the next day and the day after and then wait and see. Do it at night so this has all night to work in her system. She should come right, mine usually do. Don't go to the vet, they don't know what they are doing and mos/nearly all of them don't do chickens.

Im sooo happy to hear that she is doing better.. sometimes it takes a while for injuries to heal.. the fact she is eatting and doing well is wonderful!!!!!!! Congrats

Good old garlic aye.. I will give that a go. Your right about the vet! not worth 2cents. I’ve had far better advice here on the forum.

Yep! The other thing I have been using, which they like, is soaking 8 cups of wheat (does about 40 chooks) in an equal parts mix of honey, molasses and seaweed powder. I soaked a bucket overnight and forgot to cover it didn't I? And of course in the morning the shavers where having a good old go, so I left the mixture steeping but took the bucket out to the rest of the hungries who had their fill and three days later it was finally all gone. The wheat sprouted a bit which gives them access to more nutrition in the seed and apart from being good for them it is something different. So you could try that also if you've a mind. Howz Nelson looking? We are sunny and hotish here in Nth Canty. :)
