Hen vomiting

KiwiChook, do a search on "sour crop" at the top here. Lots of good info, including advice about adding unfiltered cider to the water to help digestion and prevent sour crop. Good luck to you!

The link given to you for the sourcrop article has not been working for some time now I noticed (I think they are redoing the site)
Here is information and articles I have collected on the matter which I think you should review:

I do not think milk and bread a good idea at all... refrain from scratch grains ... you can look at your petstore and see if you can get baby parrot handfeeding formula which is a powder you must add water to > mix that up to a porridge consistency and then mix that in with her normal crumble or pelleted feed to concentrate the nutrition.

I agree on the nystatin and think you should take her to an avian vet.
Why? Because when the feed is not moving out of the crop into the intestines (nutrition from the feed is not absorbed from the crop) then the bird eventually starves and gets dehydrated and that is life threatening.

I went back to the vet and they suggested mixing some oil into her food, vegetable or cod liver. They did agree it might be a yeast of fungal infection but didn’t know where to get the nystatin from. They will get back to me on that one…
Thanks for the link dlhunicorn, some scary reading in there!

Hi Kiwichook
it's the garlic mate, it's bloody marvellous stuff. Have you got hold of any wheatgrass juice yet? I have an old chook that I have dosed with wheatgrass and she has come back into lay. So the two given in tandem will deal to any nasties. Let me know how you go and stay away from the prescribed meds if you can, I think they bugger them up personally - no offence intended to those who have made suggestions either, I am just talking from personal experience here.
Cheers all
Lisa.

the oil may help with an impacted crop (combined with massage to break up impaction) however if it is crop stasis (so the crop has stop functioning and is no longer moving the feed through) /sour crop (candidiasis) with no impaction then it will do little in that situation.

thanks for the link pwand

When I read the signs listed they are not what I see tho.

She’s has been eating like a horse since I’ve switched feed from pallet to mash. Her stool looks healthy. She is the larger of the two birds I have and now she is just as active as the other one. She’s feeding aggressively on the new food, pushing the other bird out of the way to ensure she is getting her fair share! Her crop is still like a water balloon and she still jerks her head around every now and then. Another egg from here today! I’d like to think her swelling and discomfort will go down by itself…

Well it's been another week now and no improvement. I decided to try the nystatin and unfortunately that hasn’t helped. I withheld food and water last night and checked her out this morning to find her crop still swollen and water balloon like. I also noticed her throw up again yesterday.. she went off and sat down by herself for a bit too, obviously not feeling the best.

I’m running out of ideas now so if anyone has any feel free to enlighten me.
Thanks.

Did you give her the nystatin for at least 5 days. It wouldn't hurt to deworm her. Did you research the sour crop?

Yeah, 5 days yesterday. De-wormed 3weeks ago, that’s the first thing the vet recommended. I’ve researched the sour crop and I’m pretty sure that’s what it is. I’m now sure it’s not a yeast or candida infection or the nystatin would have helped. Maybe it’s bacterial and antibiotics are needed? I’m not sure. Maybe it’s a blockage, I can’t feel anything…
