My hen is sneezing lately and also sounds like there is fluid either in her lungs or in her throat, nose area. Is there anything that can be done and could something like this be contagious to the others? Could it be serious enough to kill her or could it just be a cold. It sounds like a person that has pneumonia when she purrs and sometimes when she breathes. She is roosting away from the others now, I was just curious what it could be and if it could be treated. Thanks!

I would get her alone in quarentine, away from your other birds, give her some asprin (dosage is available on this site) in water, tarramycin is for respritory infections. Aparently chickens do not get colds, but they get lung infections causting these symptoms. Some folks would rinse out the nasal, but I have no idea about that. Lets hope that someone with more knowledge then me reads this.
In the mean time, if its hot and humid, bring her into the house with A/C, not cold, but dehumidified air, this may help.
Good luck!!!

My Silver Sebright rooster had pneumonia from getting water in his lungs. I contacted a local university vet who diagnosed him and told me how to treat. He was breathing loudly and sounded just like my son does when he gets pneumonia. I used Tylan 50 injectable. For my bantum Silver Sebright I was told to use 1/2 cc once a day and to give him Vitamins and electrolytes in his water. I tried Terramycin but it wasn't strong enough and he was literally dying at this point. I brought him in (or you could just put him in an enclosed area), put him under a 60 watt heat light and fed him starter feed mixed with water. You could also try canned cat food I gave mine the cat food the whole time for extra protein and it gave him a boost. To inject the Tylan I pinched up a little skin on his neck and injected it there. Within 3 days he was feeling better and crowing again! I hope this helps you out, I was scared to death that he wouldn't make it and he did! Good Luck!!!

go with the Tylan..

found at most farm/feed.livestock supply stores in the livestock section, along with syringes..(1 cc syringes with 22-25 gauge needles if possible.)

I wouldn't put any meds in the water until I knew they were feeling badly too. IF they begin showing signs of the same thing I would just use the Tylan 50 on them too for a few days. Some people have good luck with the Terramycin, I haven't.
