One of our sweet hens had a prolapsed vent a few days ago. We cleaned with warm water and treated lightly with Witch Hazel. I did end up having to press the prolapse back in and it has remained inside since. She seemed to take it all well. Behaving normally eating, drinking, roosting etc. We did keep food back during the issue so she wouldn't produce an egg. Now it has been 2 days and she clearly went in to lay. She came out, but no egg. I watched her a moment and she appeared to be pooping, but a yolky substance oozed out and no more. One of our other hens tried to eat it. There is no evidence of a shell from the outside. I'm disinclined to examine her insides for fear of disrupting her further... Perhaps the minimal food for a few days produced and egg with no shell?? She is moving about fine, foraging around. Suggestions? Shall I leave her be? Or be more invasive?

Thank you all very much!!

Asked my friend as they are good with eggy stuff, they said:

Ok she needs to keep her off layers feed and just give treats for a bit. If the stuff she passed was an egg yolk the shell may follow I would give her a warm bath to relax the muscles and put a little oil round her vent. For prolapse you usually apply hemorrhoid cream as this shrinks the tissue back. She needs to keep an eye on her poops in case they look yolky to be honest I would get her on a course of anti biotics anyway just in case. Not sure they have Baytril there.

Keep her somewhere dark and quiet till she settles maybe sugar water for energy. She needs to keep her away from the others in case it comes out again and they peck it. If it comes out put it in again but if it won't stay the vet can put a small stitsh in

Thank you for your suggestion! My hubby gave her a bath yesterday (I was at work) not sure what all else happened as of yet, (he is still sleeping because he works nights) but our happy girl is cruising about like business as usual again! No apparent stress of her vent!
