@nchls school your concerns about gasoline are why I have never used it. There are threads by those that have. I try to use the least irritating/volatile methods whenever possible, and only ramp up if necessary. I would worry about the fumes of acetone or mineral spirits. I've never had a really bad case of leg mites because I check regularly and treat early, and have never brought a bird in with them like that. There are loads of threads with different methods people use. Some people have also used spinosad (elector PSP) to dip and say it works really well also, but it's expensive. I've always just soaked and cleaned and then done castor oil.
I can't see anything obvious in your picture. Is roost height maybe too high causing him to tweak it when he lands?
Wasn't meant as a criticism in any way, I just never had one offered to me, or found one, with bad mites, I've been lucky I guess. She will get cleaned up and get better with your care I'm sure. I'm very curious to see what that foot looks like once it starts improving.
Bumblefoot is usually identifiable by a dark scab on the (usually) bottom of the foot. May or may not have some swelling, depending on how long it's been there and how large it is. Sometimes the swelling will be on the top of the foot or between toes. Image below, you can google/search for more bumblefoot images, they will often be much smaller than the picture below. Roosters tend to be a bit more prone to foot and leg injuries, they weigh more than hens, their 'rooster' activities make them more likely to land wonky, spurs can catch on things and tweak legs and feet.Thank you for your response. I know it isn't leg mites. I don't think a roost problem either as I've checked that possibility. Bumble foot? We've had way more rain than usual; nothing outside ever dries out or for long. In the picture Big Boy and Little Boy are spending the day in the kitchen because of the hard rain and flooding yard. The free run shelter has a stream running through it.
That's great news, I am glad she is doing better! It would be great to see those pictures, thank you!My chicken(OP) is doing much better. I used A & D for one day, but switched to 100% petroleum jelly after that. The scales are already coming off, and I can see normal scales underneath. She also is walking on both feet and does not flinch when I touch her legs to put on the petroleum. I won’t be home during daylight until Saturday, so I will take an update pic then. I’m so glad you guys diagnosed her so I can help her feel better!
