Hello everyone!

New to Backyard Chickens, but wanted to join because I’m am seeking advice on what to do with one of our girls. This has happened to another one of our hens a few months ago, and we’re thinking it’s due to our roos’ spurs. The picture I’ve attached is our most recent discovery. When I discovered this hole a few weeks ago, we quarantined Oreo in the basement for about 2 weeks or so and applied Hen Healer Multi-Purpose Ointment every once in a while. We ended up letting her back out once we separated the roo from her flock.

This is currently what her wound looks like...
She seems to be OK, isn’t sickly and seems to be getting around fine.

However, does that look like dirt clots lodged into her wound? And should I try to remove them? Is there anything else I need to do?

ANY advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

Looks like foreign material to me. I'd bring her in, run a little bath and let her soak to soften up whatever it is, then gently remove the gunk. Take her out, hold her in a towel and blow dry her nice and fluffy again, then fill the hole with neosporin and return her to the flock.

THANK YOU! We placed her in a warm bath with a poultry wash solution, and flushed out the hole (there was lots of dirt packed in there). Ended up removing the nasty, deformed scab that had grown over her healed skin so the hole would close properly. Filled it with neosporin and put her in our pin in the basement overnight—might keep her there for a day or two to make sure she’s all good to go.

Thank you again for your help!
