I just took this hen in from a neighbor because she is very thin with hardly any appetite. Once I got her to my house I inspected her to try and figure out what was going on with her. I found this good ball size sore by her breast. It is very hardand seems infected but dry and crusty. It doesn’t present like any tumor I have ever seen. Can anyone give me any insight in what this could be? She’s is very very thin also.

It might be an abscessed breast blister, also called a keel cyst. They start with irritation and a fluid filled blister, then can become abscessed. You might want to lance it, and see if there is hardened pus inside. If not, then it could be a tumor. Damp bedding, roosts with splinters, or a hen that lies with pressure on her keel bone for long periods can have those. Does the hen lie around a lot, rather than walk around and peck at things? Clean it with Betadine (povidone iodine) before and after lancing it.

Is it right over the breast bone (keel?) Another possibility is an ingrown feather cyst that has become abscessed. Same treatment, but try to find a feather in the cyst.
