Hen with sour crop, vent gleet AND worms - help

@friedandscrambled how is your hen doing today?
HI
I put her back in the pen with the others yesterday afternoon even though her crop still felt a little balloon like but not as it had been. Got up early this morning to check her crop before she could drink or eat and it was quite down, no puffiness just feeling those little gritty granules and all. I have kept checking throughout the day as she only seemed interested in drinking this morning, did not want the egg I made so all else enjoyed, she stole a dried mealworm or two from the others and later I noticed her pecking at her feed a little so this afternoon let her out with the others to graze. She very much enjoyed that and managed to find alot of worms and some sort of gross mushy dead bug thing the I did pull from her mouth as it did not look right. Felt her again after I put them back in run and while she felt full, she did not feel "puffy" so I am hoping that things are moving along. I am still going to keep cleaning her vent and using the lotrimin as that is still a little swollen from the past few days and tomorrow is day 7 of miconazole so I will just have wait until next Sun/Mon to give safeguard to all for the second roundworm treatment. I am at least hopeful for the moment that she is on the mend but will still keep close watch.
Sorry for the running on about her.....How is your hen. I do hope better.

So glad to hear she is on the mend. Mine is a little better too but maybe not as significantly as yours.
Tomorrow is supposed to be the second dose of fenbendazole/safeguard and I am in the middle of the seven days of miconazole. Yiur post suggests I should wait on finishing the miconazole before giving the second dose of wormer.
Is that right? I had not heard of that before.

No - I did not say that.....did I? I gave the first safeguard while giving miconazole so I dont see why you could not give your second safeguard dose while giving the miconazole. It seems as though by reading alot of others posting around that a good number of people are having sour crop issues, worms, bumblefoot and whatever else these lovely ladies can possibly get (ok I wont forget the gents occassionally too)
I am glad that yours seems better - as I keep telling myself (AND my husband:rolleyes:) it takes time and patience and us being persistent in our efforts to help them out. I will check back with you to see how she is doing

Oh thanks. I probably mis-read or misunderstood. It sounds like it will be OK to give both.
Poor baby is getting a bit fed up of me stuffing a syringe down her throat!

Yes that is why I finally gave in an put her back with the others - I am so happy tomorrow is the last day of the miconazole, she sees me and runs when she used to come cuddle so I hope that lessens over time

Hi
checking in to see how your girl and you are doing? I hope things are looking up. Did you give the second wormer?
She got her second wormer about an hour ago and she gets her second miconazole in about an hour.
She has been out with her buddies all day and is eating and drinking fine but she stops now and then to try and adjust her crop so we definitely haven't solved that problem yet.
Here is what she does off and on all night - poor girl must be exhausted!
I am worried that if the crop hasn't cleared when I stop the miconazole that the yeast will come back again.
How are you two getting along? Sounded like it was heading in the right direction.

Oh my, she does not look like she gets must rest. So while she eats and drinks is the crop still squishy? Empty in the morning? how many more days do you have on the miconazole?
We are getting better. She is not running away from me but is still hesitant about me picking her up but I dont blame her as when I do I am checking her bum or putting something in her mouth 😩 She seemed perkier today and is back to digging 10 ft holes to find yummy bugs. I hope this continues as we end the miconazole today so I will have to keep an eye on her. I have another one that has some sort of different issue that I cannot seem to figure what is going on. Never ending some days.

That all sounds promising. So glad she is on the mend. And yes, it really is too much some days!
Minnie's crop is still not empty in the morning and it is still basically squishy but much smaller than a few days ago. She is eating heartily which I guess is a good sign and her crop doesn't get massive like it did when I first spotted the issue.
I keep on massaging and just hope she can clear it.
I have 2 days of miconazole to go and I would be much happier if her crop was clear before I finished the course.
