Hen with spurs

I have a Buckeye hen that has spurs that any rooster would envy. I know this isn't 'normal' but does it occur at times? And does anyone know why?

Just thought I would add...YES it is a hen!

I have seen LOTS of game hens with spurs. have yet to see any non-game hens with them tho.

Happens a lot Willow. Probably the same phenomenon that causes some women to grow mustaches..........Pop

I found a couple of hens with spurs. Pretty odd.

My sweet Black Star hen has spurs. She grew them last year during her molt. I think her hormones went a little nuts, she stopped laying for like 4 months. Just about the time we decided to stew her she produced a beautiful light brown egg! Spurs are still there. My husband thinks its funny that she has the potential to beat up any one else in the yard, but her SISTER is the mean bully
