Hi, you guys! I'm so sorry it has been so long since I've updated you guys!

Opal is still with us, slowly, slowly getting better. She stands now on her own several times a day, and has actually jumped out of her bin a few times!!!!

She's still awfully thin, but does eat and drink on her own enough to sustain herself. I decided a while back not to force-feed her, it was just too stressful for all involved, was a giant mess, and barely got anything in to her anyway. I figured with her fighting me she was probably using more energy than she was getting from the little bit I was forcing down. But I just checked on her, and she's standing again!!!

I would still put ACV in there water, ACV is acidic and this acidicy means ACV is a mild antiseptic and will kill a number of germs. In addition to this it is claimed to act like a mild antibiotic. Its full of vitamins & minerals. It has been proven to help with stress which is one of the main contributors in there immune system lowing and letting in diseases. Use for 1 week per month.. Us human's can also have some.

I've been out in the garage a lot with her yesterday and today, and it seems like she's really turned a corner just in the last couple of days -- knock on wood!! She is now standing up very frequently and walking around sometimes, too, which she really wasn't able to do before yesterday!! I have to keep picking her up and putting her back in her bin!!!

That sounds like a good idea, Tracy, I'll start that in the morning. I haven't been giving her anything but food and water because I didn't want to make the water taste icky, lol. But it's probably a good idea now that she's doing better.

you might want to read all of the responses that I got to a thread I started two weeks ago. The symptoms you mention are similar, although not quite the same, as to symptoms we have in a young bird. You can find the thread by searching by my login, zylechicks.

We have determined that our bird has Mareks disease. It is deadly and highly contagious so worth adding to your list. Please check it out. If your hen has Mareks you need to know about how to quarantine her and clean your coop. The posts on this thread are very helpful if disturbing. One thing to point out, our bird had been getting progressively better. She was eating more, drinking more and had regained her ability to walk. From what i can tell, none of that matters now.

I hope your bird doesn't have this disease but if she does, then you need to learn as I have about the consequences so that you can protect any other hens who were exposed to her.

Oh no . . . I think that's it. I'm going to get her tested. Hopefully I can find someone around here who can do a radial immunodiffusion test.
