Hens and Ashes

The hens lined up for ash bucket made me laugh! That was funny!

We heat our home with a pellet stove. Has anyone ever used that kind of ash for the chickens? The pellets are made of compressed sawdust and maybe glue (?). I am wondering if it is safe to use??? Is the glue a non-issue once burned???

Can't find info anywhere on this. Thought maybe someone here might know the answer.

Thanks so much!!

Lisa

PS Our chicks are to arrive in April and the coop is nearly finished!!

The only ashes I know that are okay for chickens are real wood ashes from a wood burning stove, nothing else added....what your talking about would seem toxic to me...

I use wood ashes cooled in the dust spots in the runs to help with mites and lice....

Wow I didnt' realize I could use these. So the wood I burn in my fireplace will work? Ok, I'll save it because I can't get DE up here and the shipping is too much!
So it's not harmful at all?

Steph

Thanks for your reply, tuffold!

That's why I want to find out. Pellet stoves have been touted as a "green" way to heat your home as they are made from sawdust (so re-purposed). Maybe there is someone who knows more about the glue used??? I'll try to find out more if I can talk to someone with any luck at a plant???

Well, good news! Pellets are made from compressed sawdust, a little water and high heat. The natural lignin found in wood binds them together. No glue.

Sounds like I have answered my own question!

If there is nothing else but wood used in your fireplace the wood ashes are a very good way to keep bugs off the chickens.....I think its the natural lye that forms from burning wood in the wood ash that is helpful for bug control....Farmers use to use this all the time in their henhouses.....I always put a bucket of ash in their dust spots...

We have lots of ashes from our fireplace that I could use for my chickens. I do have a questions about this though. The only other thing we would put in our fires would be some newspaper to get it started. Becuase this would be in the ashes as well, would this be harmful to our chickens??????

Thanks for a great idea!

our chickens are going to have alot of fun now. I am installing a wood burning stove in our house. We also have a fire pit that has left over ashes. I should have used that lol
