Hens combs appears to have warts and discoloured

My 1yr old hen recently went clucky sitting in the nest all day, I assumed her faded comb was just due to this. Then it began to get dark spots almost looking like warts of some kind and completely covering her comb. I am also now noticing some spots starting on the other hens who aside from this seem well. My clucky hen is by far the worst however still comes out to eat and drink, but she looks dreadful! Really want my hens back to full health asap, so your assistance is much appreciated! I have attached a photo for reference.

What part of the country are you from? Frostbite looks similar.

It looks like a fungus. I would take her to a vet.

Welcome to BYC Mandy. That appears to be dry fowl pox, a virus spread by mosquitoes. It last around 3 weeks, but it may travel slowly through the flock with direct contact. You may want to separate the ones with pox, and make sure they are eating and drinking normally. If any look especially weak or are not eating, I would look inside the throats for any yellow patches of wet pox. Most chickens only get dry pox, but sometimes will get scabs near the eyes. If you see scabs on eyelids, it might be good to treat with some Terramycin ointment into the eyes twice daily.

This looks like it could be frostbite or fowl pox. If you live in a warmer climate, we can rule out frostbite so I would then say fowl pox. You will want to separate her if this is the case, because fowl pox is contagious to other chickens. Good luck! Let us know how she is!

Welcome to BYC - fowl pox. Make sure that their eyes do not become scabbed over to the point that they are unable to eat or drink.

Well after some further research and backed by a few comments here, we are certain it is fowl pox! We do have mosquitos around with the warm weather and rain so it seems to stack up. Heres hoping some tlc and natural treatment clears it up quick, and if not thankfully there seem to be some medication we can treat them with. Thanks all.

Sorry to here about your chicken. Hope it recovers soon. 5 of my 7 chicks have similar symptoms, although living in very dry southern California, I'm not sure how many mosquitos we have. Good luck and hope none of the other chickens in your flock develop symptoms!
