Hens don't return to coop at night after hen dies

Mite infestation could drive them out so it's good you have cleaned it out, I'm not saying that's what you found but certainly a possibility. I like to use a poultry dust containing pyrethrin to dust all cracks and crevices.

There are various types of traps you can try setting, mice are fairly easy to catch, rat we haven't had luck with anything but poison. They will have tunnels dug everywhere, so if you see no tunnels try setting some traps for mice and block off access so your dog get his nose snapped.
 
i don't know that i have ever seen mites. but they looked and felt like what mites would look and feel like.... made me run for the hills. I am afraid to look on line, little tiny green chartreuse looking things
