I have 2 hens that are laying on top of each other in the nesting box. I assume this is part of brooding or is it something else?

sometimes they just have a favourite nest box and all want the same one. Try putting some dummy eggs or even golf balls in the other nest boxes to encourage them to use those. And don't let them sleep there at night if you want to break the broodiness

Yeah...happens...one pullet will be in the box and another is either standing on the coop floor squawking at her or trying to take over the nest by stirring on the first pullet. It's not like there aren't any other boxes to choose from (with fake eggs in them)

Does this happen when they are laying eggs, or to sleep at night?

I used to have a medium dog crate as a nest box. A couple times, I found 2 hens side by side, laying at the same time.

When you gotta go, you gotta go
