Hens not laying

I have 6 hens that are 2 years old, they have virtually stopped laying. What is going on with that. They were good layers last year but I don’t get but about 3 eggs a week now.

Are any of them molting?

First year pullets usually lay very well even through winter. At 2yrs, they likely are molting or getting ready to molt. A lot of hens take a break for winter.

Have you tried adding light starting early morning until sunrise?

If they aren’t molting the extra light might get them on track if they are just slowing down due to the shorter winter days.

I have Rhode Island Reds, yes it is winter, and they do get morning sunlight

Mine, all went on strike! I think it was a Chickens union dispute. We are in negotiations for a settlement.

It isn’t about the morning sun it’s about lengthening the “day light” for the chickens. Adding light starting around 3am to sunrise make the hens feel like days are longer. Some people say this tricks them into laying again by mimicking the longer summer days. Other people say it’s best to give the hens a break in winter. It’s really up to the chicken keeper to decide what’s best for their flock so do what feels right for you. Best of luck getting your girls laying again.

It's winter. This is normal. It is also normal for hens in their prime to lay through their very first year (including winter), but we are approaching the shortest day of the year (only 10 days out), not not laying is normal. As long as the birds appear to be in good health otherwise, I wouldn't worry too much. After the solstice production will slowly pick back up again until they are in full swing come spring. Hang in there!

Also... yes, supplemental lighting can help keep hens laying through winter, but if you have not already been doing this, just throwing lighting in mid winter after they have already pretty much stopped production probably isn't going to do much. Again, in just 10 days, daylight will start increasing naturally, so you should be just fine

Note: I have Sunshine 24-7 in my coop! She's a great hen and I love her very much!
